Fire Extinguishers
The new BS EN 3 standard defines a new extinguisher colour code in part 5 "Portable Fire Extinguishers - Specification and supplementary tests". In the old standard, the entire body of the extinguisher was colour-coded, whereas the new standard requires that extinguisher is predominantly coloured signal red with appropriate colour bands to indicate the contents.
Fires are classified into five groups A, B, C, D and F.
- Class A fires: fires involving organic solids like paper, wood, etc
- Class B fires: fires involving flammable Liquids.
- Class C fires: fires involving flammable Gasses
- Class D fires: fires involving Metals .
- Class F fires: fires involving Cooking oils
Fire extinguishers are classified in terms of their suitability to deal with these classes of fire.
Class D and F fires may require specialised extinguishers depending on the situation. These are not listed here, but are available upon further discussion.
